How do I incorporate CBD into my daily life?
One question we often receive is how to incorporate the use of CBD into daily life. To do this can actually be easier than you think, because there are so many CBD products and the wide variety of uses allows you to include it into your day without difficulty.
You can choose to take CBD in capsules, tinctures, topicals, edibles and more. Personally, we love cooking with CBD ingredients and therefore this is our starting place for using it everyday.
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive compound within the cannabis plant. CBD is one of many cannabinoids within the cannabis plant, the other most prevalent being THC, or Tetrahydrocannabidoil.
Cannabis plants with less than 0.2-3% of THC are classed as hemp and can legally be grown in the UK. Cannabis plants with higher levels of THC are marijuana, which causes psychoactive effects (a high) and are an illegal substance. CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant but can also be made synthetically.
CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system which itself helps to regulate a number of vital bodily functions.
What are the benefits of CBD?
CBD has a number of benefits, including:
• Anti-anxiety properties
• Is an anti-inflammatory
• Can relieve pain
• Is a neuroprotectant
• Can help with psychotic states
• Can have anti-tumor effects
Why cook with CBD?
Using CBD in cooking is not only an easy way to achieve your daily dose, but if you suffer from an acute condition, it can also be a way to maintain a constant level. When you consume CBD within food, it is digested and absorbed more slowly. This can be beneficial if you are new to taking CBD because it will be introduced to your system over time, providing a milder experience.
You’ll barely notice a difference in the taste of your food, or you can choose to cook with flavoured CBD oils.
How do I use CBD in cooking?
Cooking with CBD is one of the easiest way to include it into your daily health routine. Here’s our top ways to add CBD to your favourite recipes.
- Add CBD to Oils, Fats and Salad Dressings
CBD is lipid-soluble, meaning that it will dissolve in most fats and oils. It’s therefore really easy to add to healthy fats and oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, coconut butter, ghee etc.
Also consider adding CBD to your salad dressings, just be sure to shake it to to distribute evenly within the dressing.
- Add CBD to your meals
It’s possible to add CBD to almost any meal. If a meal is low-fat, you’ll need to mix more to distribute the CBD evenly. There are a number of meals that you can add CBD to, including Scrambled eggs, pasta sauces, marinades, Pizza, mashed potatoes or other vegetables, dips, soups and stews.
- Add CBD to your sweet treats
CBD can also be used in baking and confectionary. Why not add a few drops of CBD oil when you’re making cookies, brownies, cakes or sweets?
- Include CBD in drinks
CBD and a tablespoon of high fat milk or oil, such as coconut or avocado into your morning latte or smoothie is a great way to include CBD in your morning routine.
Top Tips for cooking with CBD
There are a few things to remember when cooking with CBD:
- Start small
If you’re using CBD for the first time, you must start with a low dose initially, until you know how your body responds to it. Also, using too much CBD oil in your food could overpower the flavour and spoil the dish. This not only wastes food but also valuable CBD oil.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that in a pure state, CBD does not cause harm even at high doses. Side effects of too much CBD are usually mild and can include headaches, diarrhoea, nausea, fatugues and dry mouth.
Always use a high quality odourless and flavourless CBD oil.
Below is a chart* outlining the recommended dose ranges depending on the strength you’re looking for. Here, we describe how this dose can change depending on the potency of the oil you’re using.
For example, a high-strength dose will require 15ml of a low-potency oil, but only 5ml of a high-potency oil.
Ideal Doses per Serving of CBD
Dose Strength Dosage Range 300mg Oil (30ml Bottle) 600mg Oil (30 ml Bottle) 1000mg Oil (30ml Bottle)
Low 10 mg to 30 mg 1 mL to 3 ml 0.5 ml to 1.5 ml 0.25 ml to 1 ml
Medium 30 mg to 50 mg 3 mL to 5 ml 1.5 ml to 2.5 ml 1 ml to 1.5 ml
High 50 mg to 150 mg 5 mL to 15 ml 2.5 ml to 7.5 ml 1.5 ml to 5 ml
Taking these doses into account, you can determine how much CBD you should be adding to your food. If you’re making a larger batch of something, such as cookies, you can calculate the number of servings and add enough CBD to be divided into each serving.
For example, if you’re baking enough cookies for eight people, you should add eight doses of CBD at the desired strength.
- Watch the temperature
CBD is sensitive to heat and light, and will suffer if cooking temperatures go above 365oF (185oC). Also be careful to keep CBD away from naked flames, as these damage the terpenes and phytonutrients, the elements that are vital for CBD’s health benefits.
- Store your CBD carefully
Because CBD is sensitive to light and heat, keep it in a cool, dark place to maintain its quality and flavour.
- Remember everyone is different
Everyone reacts differently to CBD, so if you’re cooking for others consider using a lower dose than you might use for yourself. You can increase this over time, once you know that others don’t experience any unwanted side effects.
- Be patient
Consuming CBD in food takes longer for your body to digest, so the effects may not be as potent or fast-acting. Be patient with the results.
